SALISBURY � Local community education classes about Alzheimer's disease launch next week in recognition of November as Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month. Classes start Nov. 14 with a "Maintain Your Brain: How to Live a Brain Healthy Lifestyle" session at the Alzheimer's Association Eastern Shore office, 2090-C Milford St. in Salisbury. The class is interactive, providing research-based information about the positive impact of lifestyle choices and changes on brain health and brain disease throughout life. .
St. Amant firefighters receive FEMA grant
ST. AMANT — The Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded a $110,960 grant to the St. Amant Volunteer Fire Department, Fire Chief James LeBlanc said Tuesday. "It’s the third year in a row we have received a FEMA grant," LeBlanc said. "That’s about $300,000 the parish didn’t have to pay," he said of the three grants. Other fire departments on the east bank of the parish also have received grants, bringing the total received in the past three years to more than $500,000, LeBlanc said. The grant announced Tuesday will be used to buy firefighting protective gear, a thermal imagining camera that locates fires inside walls, complete training lesson plans with laptop computers, a PowerPoint system and training manuals, LeBlanc said.

The ACP (American College of Physicians) has released its latest clinical practice guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). COPD is a lung disease which progresses slowly - lung function is progressively lost. COPD is more common among smokers. The guidelines appear in Annals of Internal Medicine, November 6th, 2007 issue. Over 5% of US adults have COPD. It is the fourth primary cause of death and the twelfth leading cause of illness in the USA. A COPD patient will typically have a chronic cough, wheezing - some patients may also have shortness of breath and considerable activity limitation. Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are both types of COPDs. As patients usually have overlapping symptoms, it has become more common today for doctors to use the broader term COPD.
