Thermography offers an exam option

When accepted medical procedures seem to be lacking, some people search for another way. That is the case with nurse practitioner Carolyn Walker and pharmacist Sue Horton, who own Thermography of Iowa in Urbandale.

Thermography is a computerized infrared imaging they say is a tool for screening breast health. It can be used as a supplement to mammography and it can detect abnormalities in the breast even earlier than mammograms, Walker and Horton say.

The procedure measures heat from the surface of the breast and reveals areas where quickly dividing cells, typical of those that become cancer, might be at work. The rapidly multiplying cells need additional blood flow, and the increased blood vessel activity shows up as a hot spot on the digital infrared image.

Thermography works by measuring body heat, shown by various colors on the digital image.

NEWS- Pesticide poison: Area schools behind the times in pest control

There's no question that certain health ailments have soared in frequency over the past decade. The incidence of asthma, allergies, and autism are at an all-time high in children, according to numerous medical studies, and many doctors are pointing to the link between chemical pesticides and such health problems.

Nationally, some states have banned the use of pesticides in schools, and in Virginia-- at the urging of the Virginia Department of Education and the Department of Environmental Quality-- nearly two dozen school systems have adopted "integrated pest management" plans, in which pesticides are used only as a last resort.

Two school systems are noticeably missing from that list, however, and environmental advocates are bugging them to change that.

"Our kids are really sick today," says Jackie Lombardo, who's affiliated with both the advocacy nonprofit Friend and Advocates for Children, Teachers and Schools as well as the Piedmont branch of the Sierra Club.

Professional associations and trade unions reject constitutional reform

Twenty-nine Venezuelan professional associations and trade unions called upon Venezuelans to cast their ballots next December 2 to reject the constitutional reform advanced by President Hugo Chávez, branding the proposed changes as "illegal" and "anti-democratic."

"The reform does not ensure personal security and integrity, it will not lower prices, it will not improve hospitals, and it will not stop illnesses such as dengue, measles, malaria, tuberculosis, and others from continuing to spread. It does not mitigate food shortage, it does not prevent low birth weight or growth or development disorders resulting from the lack of milk consumption during pregnancy, it does not ensure plans for road maintenance, it does not provide for credit plans of plans to build houses, it will not lower inflation," they claimed.
