Renewable and alternative energies focus of Economic Summit
The Jo Daviess County Office of Economic Development announces its upcoming economic summit to be held on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at Woodbine Bend, 3500 E. Center Road, Woodbine, IL. Highlighting the event is a panel discussion entitled "Economic Development in a Post-Petroleum World", which will feature speakers from renewable and alternative energy producers in the region. "We're very excited about hosting this first economic summit," states Economic Development Director Pat Leitzen Fye. "The topic of how we function as a local and regional economy in the face of global changes that impact our petroleum usage especially in an agricultural county like ours is both fascinating and timely." The summit is designed, Leitzen Fye states, to serve as both a forum for educating residents about the renewable energy efforts in the Northwest Illinois region and how those efforts will change our economy, but also as an opportunity to learn about the activities taking place in economic development in the county over the past couple of years.
Health district recommends flu shots
The Westport Weston Helath District recommends flu shots for those at high risk of the flu. What is the flu? Influenza is an acute viral infection characterized by the sudden onset of fever, chills, headaches, muscle pains, severe weakness, exhaustion and cough. "Prevention is the best means to help stop the spread of this potentially life-threatening illness.
Bilbray bill proposes stricter immigration enforcement
A new bill by Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-Solana Beach, would require employers to verify that all of their new workers are in the country legally. One of the most vocal critics of illegal immigration in Congress, Bilbray said the bill also would call for an increase in the number of U.S. Border Patrol agents, intensify aerial surveillance at the nation's borders and increase the number of detention facilities. But critics say some of its supporters have co-sponsored the bill simply to appear tough on illegal immigration before the November elections. Since the bill was introduced Nov. 5, its list of co-sponsors has grown to 112, including 44 Democrats, making the bill more likely to move forward in the House, Bilbray said. The bill's main sponsor is North Carolina Democrat Heath Shuler."Congress has the responsibility to take action and respect the mandate given by the American people to enforce our laws, secure our borders and address illegal employment," Bilbray said.
Nurse prescribing - the benefits and the pitfalls
More than 30,000 district nurses (DNs) and health visitors (HVs) are qualified to prescribe from the restricted list of medicines described in the Nurse Prescribers Formulary (NPF) for Community Practitioners. Over 10, 000 nurses (across England) are qualified to prescribe both as independent and supplementary prescribers. As of May 2006, Nurse Independent Prescribers (NIPs) have been able to independently prescribe any licensed medicine (and some controlled drugs) provided that it is within their area of competence. These nurses can also prescribe any medicine as a supplementary prescriber. This article takes a look at some of the benefits and disadvantages of nurse prescribing (as seen by doctors, patients, and nurses), the extent to which nurses are prescribing medicines, and some of the factors that facilitate and hamper the prescription of medicines by nurses.
Coolermaster case is both clever and smart
THERE ARE TWO flavours of computer case we see in the labs these days. The first is by a known computer manufacturer where the design is very formulaic and made for only one, often bespoke, motherboard. Low cost is a significant factor within the mass production of these units, which is clearly evident when you open them up. The other has more options for expandability, varied in design to suit multiple motherboards and has a greater aesthetically pleasing overall look. Coolermaster passed along one of their latest cases of the latter of late, along with the X-Craft 360 for us to browse over at The INQ. Cooler Master COSMOS 1000 The COSMOS 1000 first caught our eye at CeBit this year, when coverage began to trickle out caused quite a stir.
The Village Network wins 2007 Agency of the Year
WOOSTER -- The Village Network's recent award marked "a very special occasion for all of us," Executive Director Jim Miller said at a reception honoring the distinction of the Alliance for Children and Families "2007 Agency of the Year" National Award. "We were quite surprised when we heard we were going to be the national recipient of the agency of the year," Miller said. McCord commended the contributions of sound board decisions and generous donors who "fund many of the new initiatives" for which the Village Network was recognized. He also acknowledged "hard work and sacrifices" by all those involved with the facility.
