Nurse prescribing - the benefits and the pitfalls

More than 30,000 district nurses (DNs) and health visitors (HVs) are qualified to prescribe from the restricted list of medicines described in the Nurse Prescribers Formulary (NPF) for Community Practitioners. Over 10, 000 nurses (across England) are qualified to prescribe both as independent and supplementary prescribers. As of May 2006, Nurse Independent Prescribers (NIPs) have been able to independently prescribe any licensed medicine (and some controlled drugs) provided that it is within their area of competence. These nurses can also prescribe any medicine as a supplementary prescriber.

This article takes a look at some of the benefits and disadvantages of nurse prescribing (as seen by doctors, patients, and nurses), the extent to which nurses are prescribing medicines, and some of the factors that facilitate and hamper the prescription of medicines by nurses.

The Faith Column

What picture pops into your mind when you read the word feminist? Is it a woman layered in petticoats with a big, swooping hat, picketing the white house for her right to vote? Is it Gloria Steinem in her aviator glasses, sleek, straight hair hanging down both sides of her pretty face?

These are the dominant images that so many people associate with feminist history, and for good reason. The first imagethe suffragistrepresents the so-called first wave of feminist history. These women, philosophising and organising from the late 1800s through the 1930s, were primarily focused on legal and institutional changes that would allow women to gain more power and autonomy.

The second wave, then, was most active in the 1960s and 1970s and was concerned with social and psychological liberation (think dishes, contraception, and objectification).

Sonoma West News

Alarming statistics surrounding what health officials have tagged an epidemic are revealed in a new report from the Sonoma County Asthma Coalition."Asthma in Schools," the eye-opening two-page document, will be sent out to parents of students enrolled in various Sonoma County schools, as well as every law enforcement agency, fire department, superintendent, and elected official in the county, in an attempt to improve asthma-related health conditions for students, staff and community members.School nurses, libraries, past volunteers of the American Lung Association, and the media will also be among the 5,000 recipients of the report, which states that nearly one in five school-aged children - or about 20 percent of students in the county have asthma."Asthma is a chronic disease that produces recurring episodes of breathing problems, including coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath," the SCAC states in its report.

Reading this may just save your life, if cancer experts are right

BACON, smoked ham and processed sausages are a cancer threat and should be cut from people's diet altogether, according to the world's most comprehensive study of the disease.

The World Cancer Research Fund says the evidence is now strong enough for it to recommend that people stop eating all processed meats, whether they have been smoked, cured, salted or preserved with chemicals.

What concerns voters now

What's the most important issue facing the state these days? According to a recent poll by St. Norbert College, it's high taxes and government spending. No surprise there, really. The two have been at the top of the list likely since government was invented. About 35 percent of those surveyed think the tax structure is the problem. Some of those 35 percent upset about the budget say that government is spending money too much on the wrong things and too little on the right things.

In second place is government ethics. About 11 percent say this broad category is their top concern. Over half of the comments in the category say Gov. Doyle is the biggest problem while partisanship and politics was second. It appears that people are still smarting from the state budget process.

The economy concerned 9 percent of the survey.

Irondequoit to Better Track Renters

It's one of Rochester's fastest growing communities, and many who own property in the Town of Irondequoit are trying to cash in. Those who already live there are hoping a recently passed town ordinance will make landlords and future tenants live up to their responsibilities.

The new law will help the town keep a close eye on rental properties, and whether or not they're being maintained properly. It's something all who live there have a stake in.

Taking care of a piece of property all by yourself can be a handful, especially in the fall.

"There's always raking, there's painting inside and updating appliances," said Bev Spayde. "All kinds of things and in actuality, it's a job," she said.

Spayde has been taking care of a piece of property in Irondequoit for six years.
