Some goodies have been longtime favorites for school kids. Crawford Central adopts nutrition program By Jamie Musick 11/19/07 — Some goodies have been longtime favorites for school kids. But many parents will soon be reconsidering the numbers of iced cupcakes and fudge brownies they're bringing to school, and perhaps choosing pre-sliced apples and broccoli florets instead for their children's classroom parties. And elementary and high school administrators will be closely monitoring how many chicken patties and fried foods students are purchasing throughout the week. .
Defeating Thyroid Cancer - My Story
Ive always tried to do everything in my power necessary to live a long, disease-free, happy life. I maintained an ideal body weight via diet and exercise, did not smoke, and only drank alcohol occasionally. Although I dreaded needles and the mere thought of doctors, I visited my general practitioner on a regular basis; I realized physical examinations were necessary for my well-being. Yes, I was a big chicken, but forced myself to go, anyway. I graduated college in 1989 and found employment in the health care industry. I rented a studio apartment; to me, it was a palace. Life seemed full of promise and I was ready to take on the world. One day in March, 1990, I came home from work and jumped onto my bed to watch television. I was lying on my stomach, with my hands supporting my head.
Calif. Still Seeking Health Care Reform
To show that health care reform in California still has a pulse, state Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez will put his latest plan to a vote Wednesday before a key committee. But whether there really are any signs of life can only be measured behind closed doors. .
Childhood Influenza Immunization Coalition Encourages Vaccination Throughout The Influenza Season
To raise awareness of the need to vaccinate more infants, children and adolescents against influenza, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in conjunction with Families Fighting Flu, declared, November 27, as the first ever "Children's Flu Vaccination Day." The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases' (NFID) Childhood Influenza Immunization Coalition commends this effort to emphasize the importance of annual influenza vaccination to protect children and their contacts from this serious and potentially deadly virus. "Influenza claims more American lives every year than all other vaccine- preventable diseases combined," said Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, Coalition Chair, 17th Surgeon General of the United States (2002-2006), President of Canyon Ranch Institute and Distinguished Professor of Public Health, The University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health.
Poutine's turning 50 - time for some respect, please
If you thought poutine, Quebec's favourite fast food concoction, was made of french fries topped with gravy and salty cheese curds, you're wrong. According to the political scientist who wrote a book on Quebec's signature dish, the real recipe is a generous portion of shame fried gently in an inferiority complex and topped with a hint of denigration from the ROC (Rest of Canada) - and a touch of guilty pleasure. "Love it or hate it, poutine has become a strong symbol of Quebec," said Charles-Alexandre Théorêt, author of Maudite poutine! .

Good news, bad news
From time to time I actually try to do what's right in my dietary habits. I try to eat good foods and as many natural foods as I can. When I slip up and indulge in high fat foods loaded with preservatives (more often than I care to admit), I suffer a severe case of nutritional guilt. However, the things I've been reading in the newspaper lately certainly have put me into a nutritional tizzy. I thought I had a pretty good idea of what foods were nutritionally good and what ones were not. Now, I just don't know. For years the good health people have been telling us to avoid chemical preservatives, especially BHA and BHT. Why? Because it was believed these nasty chemicals could cause cancer - the Big C. Now it seem that not only do the nasty chemicals not cause cancer, they may in fact, even help to prevent it.
Letters to the Editor
Phallic inspiration or not, I often admire the esthetics of well-designed tall buildings and even understand some of the benefits of denser land use. However, I seem to have missed one obvious question in these several years of passionate debate about downtown Berkeley height limits: How are persons rescued from “16-story point towers" in case of earthquake or fire? Gerta Farber • NATURE OF DEATH Editors, Daily Planet: In his thoughtful “Sonata on Important Things" (Nov. 2) Marvin Chachere offers a formulation, for himself and for the rest of us, on the nature of death. It invites contemplation and, perhaps, some further assessment. He first relates an assertion by Professor George Wald that “death does not exist in the non-human world and must therefore have meaning only among humans." While this seems generally true, there is convincing evidence that elephants and the gorilla Koko have shown clear awareness of death as well as empathy for the dead, if not actual mourning.
