Only one in 13 police are on the beat in Scotland

ONLY 7.5% of Scottish police officers are available for frontline duties despite record recruitment, according to shocking new figures obtained by Scotland on Sunday.

More officers are on holiday or doing paperwork than are on patrol at any one time, the disturbing statistics from the Scottish Police Federation (SPF) reveal.

Courthouse guards to be given Tasers

Handguns are out. Tasers are in, at least for the 24 security guards at the Bucks County Courthouse, said county director of emergency management John Dougherty. The guards will also replace their traditional police officer uniforms with blazers, tan slacks, shirts and ties, Dougherty said. What we looked at was the number of people who enter the courthouse every day. We felt that rather than having them armed with .40-caliber handguns in a crowded entryway, the Tasers would be safer because theyre a non-lethal means of control, Dougherty said. He said that armed sheriffs deputies are still available in the courthouse to respond to any incident that could call for lethal force. Bucks joins Delaware, Montgomery and Chester counties in providing what is called soft security, Dougherty said.

NPs can have positive impact

If there were easy solutions to Ontario's doctor shortage they'd be in place by now, but one idea before the province's health advisory council has real promise.

The idea is to give nurse practitioners additional powers that are currently the purview of physicians.

NPs are expert nurses with extra education that enables them to provide front-line primary health care. They work closely with family docs and other healthcare workers and can currently diagnose and treat everyday illnesses such as minor infections and injuries. They can also help patients to manage chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes or high blood pressure.

If Ontario were to amend the law, it could allow nurse practitioners to treat fractures and dislocations, dispense additional drugs and administer ultrasound and other diagnostic tools.
