New guidelines to prevent, avoid asthma attacks listed

Washington, Nov 12 : Asthma patients can avoid serious symptoms and disability if they follow the latest guidelines to keep their disease under control.

The guidelines, from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute's National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP).The main highlights of the 2007 asthma guidelines were presented during the Annual Meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) in an attempt not only to increase awareness of the new recommendations, but also to help make sure they get put into practice. "Asthma is not an event, it is a chronic disease that can be managed so that symptoms are controlled and severe attacks are prevented. The guidelines underscore the fact that people who are diagnosed with asthma do not have to suffer breathing difficulties or cut back on their activities.

All women face high risk of heart disease

A woman dies of heart disease about every minute in the United States. Only 13 percent of women view it as a threat.

Stephanie Hammar-Samuels sure didn't. On a hike up Mount Herman in fall 2005, she was the one nagging her buddies to go faster.

The next morning, she woke up nauseated.

She assumed she'd come down with the flu, but the urge to vomit persisted for more than a week and was sometimes so strong she had to pull her car to the side of the road. She thought she might be pregnant, but the home test came back negative. Then she noticed she was short of breath walking up a flight of stairs.

Hammar-Samuels was 39 and healthy; a nonsmoker with no history of heart problems in her family. But coronary heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women older than 25, doesn't discriminate.

U.S. is virtually unscathed by hurricanes; emergency planners worry about apathy

Despite alarming predictions, the U.S. came through a second straight hurricane season virtually unscathed, raising fears among emergency planners that they will be fighting public apathy and overconfidence when they warn people to prepare for next year.

Friday marks the official close of the Atlantic season, so unless a storm forms in the next few days, only one hurricane -- and a minor one at that -- will have hit the U.S. during the June-to-November period. Mexico and Central America, however, were struck by a record two top-scale Category 5 storms.

The preliminary total for the season: 14 named storms, five of them hurricanes, two of them major.

That was less activity than the government predicted before the season started, and stands in stark contrast to 2004 and 2005, when the U.S.

Fried-free Chinese fit choice

Is there any way to stick to a diet and still indulge in my favorite Chinese cuisine?

Not to worry - it can be done.

People used to think that Chinese food was inherently healthier, but the truth is that many dishes are loaded with fat, salt and calories. But it's still possible to dodge the diet bullets and indulge in the food you love.

Public health advocate Charles Stuart Platkin offers some helpful tips for navigating a Chinese restaurant menu in his latest book, The Diet Detective's Calorie Bargain Bible:

• Avoid the fried dishes like General Tso's chicken, sesame chicken and sweet-and-sour chicken.

• Most Chinese food is made to order, so ask that your dish be made with little or no oil or steamed.

• Request brown rice instead of white if available, and get it steamed rather than fried.
