Renewable and alternative energies focus of Economic Summit

The Jo Daviess County Office of Economic Development announces its upcoming economic summit to be held on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at Woodbine Bend, 3500 E. Center Road, Woodbine, IL. Highlighting the event is a panel discussion entitled "Economic Development in a Post-Petroleum World", which will feature speakers from renewable and alternative energy producers in the region.

"We're very excited about hosting this first economic summit," states Economic Development Director Pat Leitzen Fye. "The topic of how we function as a local and regional economy in the face of global changes that impact our petroleum usage especially in an agricultural county like ours is both fascinating and timely." The summit is designed, Leitzen Fye states, to serve as both a forum for educating residents about the renewable energy efforts in the Northwest Illinois region and how those efforts will change our economy, but also as an opportunity to learn about the activities taking place in economic development in the county over the past couple of years.

Nigeria: How Electromolecular Medicine Cures Ailments

Medical scientists have ingeniously developed a device that could be used in the treatment of ailments without the use of the conventional drugs. Depth-empulse is an electromagnetic device that heals four times faster than any known technology or drugs. Godwin Haruna writes

It is a novel device invented by Dr. Glenn Gordon, an American, as a curative therapy. Designed Electromagnetic Pulsed Therapy (DEPTH) has been found superior to drugs in the treatment of many conditions as diverse as arthritis, fractures, low back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome and many others. According to Dr. Tony Didigu, an associate of Gordon in Nigeria, the device is the only professional electromagnetic fields therapy in the world that speeds up free radical neutralisation by antioxidants 100 times faster and affects tissue restoration and repair four times faster than any other known technology or drugs.

Amy's manager quits over drug concerns

Amy Winehouse's manager has quit, accusing the singer of ruining his health with her drug taking.

Thom Stone parted ways with the Rehab singer after doctors reportedly found heroin in his system which he passively inhaled on the tour bus.

A source revealed: "Stone was constantly bailing Amy out.

"He was watching them get off their heads on drugs and wondering whether Amy was even going to get up on stage. It was a nightmare job."

Amy and her husband Blake Fielder-Civil reportedly thought Stone was joking when he produced a doctor's note which revealed traces of heroin in his system, but friends insist they are pleased he has gone.

One pal told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "When he showed them this note Blake and Amy thought it was a joke.

THE PANDEMIC VACCINE PUZZLE A seven-part series on the chances for immunizing the world against pandemic flu

Editor's note: This article was originally published in CIDRAP News as a seven-part series running from October 25 through November 2, 2007. It investigates the prospects for development of vaccines to head off the threat of an influenza pandemic posed by the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The series puts advances in vaccine technology in perspective by illuminating the formidable barriers to producing an effective and widely usable vaccine in a short time frame.

Part 1: Flu research: a legacy of neglect
Part 2: Vaccine production capacity falls far short
Part 3: H5N1 poses major immunologic challenges
Part 4: The promise and problems of adjuvants
Part 5: What role for prepandemic vaccination?
Part 6: Looking to novel vaccine technologies
Part 7: Time for a vaccine 'Manhattan Project'?
Bibliography

Part 1: Flu research: a legacy of neglect It has been 10 years since the H5N1 strain of avian influenza first grabbed international attention by causing the death of a Hong Kong 3-year-old, the novel virus's first known human casualty (see Bibliography: CDC 1997).

Orange County's top two emergency-management supervisors have been demoted for separate incidents of improper behavior.

Melissa McDaniel, the former director of emergency management and operations, is accused of recruiting two employees under her supervision to work on county time at the polls on Election Day on behalf of Sheriff Mark Amos.

Mason Vines, the former E-911 center manager, is accused of making a racially offensive remark to another county employee.

Coolermaster case is both clever and smart

THERE ARE TWO flavours of computer case we see in the labs these days. The first is by a known computer manufacturer where the design is very formulaic and made for only one, often bespoke, motherboard. Low cost is a significant factor within the mass production of these units, which is clearly evident when you open them up.

The other has more options for expandability, varied in design to suit multiple motherboards and has a greater aesthetically pleasing overall look. Coolermaster passed along one of their latest cases of the latter of late, along with the X-Craft 360 for us to browse over at The INQ.

Cooler Master COSMOS 1000

The COSMOS 1000 first caught our eye at CeBit this year, when coverage began to trickle out caused quite a stir.
