OBAMA-FOREIGN POLICY

Obama calls for renewed approach to diplomacy, underscores his differences with Clinton

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) — Democrat Barack Obama, confronting claims that he's light on foreign policy, surrounded himself Tuesday with heavyweights who said his differences with rival Hillary Rodham Clinton and others are just what the country needs: A new leader willing to talk with America's enemies and become a better friend to struggling nations.

Obama, closing the three-hour policy forum, said a president should be unafraid to meet with tyrants, and must restore the nation's moral authority by ending torture, closing Guantanamo Bay's military prison and helping fight global poverty and AIDS.

Asthma education brochures aimed at minorities miss the mark in Wisconsin

A Wisconsin study found that take-home educational materials designed for the state's minority children with asthma do not adequately address the cultural and linguistic issues unique to racial/ethnic minority groups.

The study evaluated the educational pamphlets using a tool created by the Wisconsin Asthma Coalition, a group of administrators, researchers and health care professionals. The researchers analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of the language, visuals, depictions of cultural attitudes and medical provider practices.

"This is a first of its kind. No one has developed a tool to gauge the cultural competence of asthma education materials," said lead study author Jane Brotanek, M.D. "It may serve as a model for other states."

The study appears in the autumn issue of the journal Ethnicity & Disease .

Fried-free Chinese fit choice

Is there any way to stick to a diet and still indulge in my favorite Chinese cuisine?

Not to worry - it can be done.

People used to think that Chinese food was inherently healthier, but the truth is that many dishes are loaded with fat, salt and calories. But it's still possible to dodge the diet bullets and indulge in the food you love.

Public health advocate Charles Stuart Platkin offers some helpful tips for navigating a Chinese restaurant menu in his latest book, The Diet Detective's Calorie Bargain Bible:

• Avoid the fried dishes like General Tso's chicken, sesame chicken and sweet-and-sour chicken.

• Most Chinese food is made to order, so ask that your dish be made with little or no oil or steamed.

• Request brown rice instead of white if available, and get it steamed rather than fried.

Good news and bad for SNP: He's popular - but independence isn't

THE SNP won the Scottish Parliament election in May because people trusted Alex Salmond to be a good first minister, not because they wanted an independent Scotland, according to a major new piece of research published last night.

Researchers found that support for independence is now at a ten-year low of 23 per cent, despite the SNP's victory in May.

Biz Buzz: Another shop on SLO block to close doors

Dawn Curnes is closing The Waggin' Tail Cafe & Barkery, a boutique for pets, in San Luis Obispo next Friday.

Her two-year-old business will be the third to close within the month on Marsh Street between Broad and Garden streets.

Curnes said earlier this month that she intended to stay in business at least long enough to get a boost from Christmas sales. But after getting advice from a business expert, she said, "it just was not in the books to continue."

"I've been losing money from March on," said Curnes, who never accrued any pay for herself in the two years she's been open. "National predictions say retail will be very soft this Christmas, and there's just no end in sight. Now I have to buy myself out of retail contracts and sell my equipment below market, just to get rid of it, so I anticipate losses around $35,000 to $50,000."

Curnes said she believed her business closure may be one of many to come in the near future.

What Thanksgiving means to me

Thanksgiving for the Cortese family of Kinnelon means family, friends and, of course, food.

"While we may vary some of the side dishes, we always have two turkeys, one roasted and one fried, mashed potatoes, old fashioned sweet potatoes with marshmallows, stuffing and, of course, gravy," Lynn Cortese wrote to the Daily Record.

"We all go around the table and state at least one thing that we are thankful for."

The Daily Record asked readers to tell us what Thanksgiving means to you, and you responded. Many of your answers can be found in this special section; more will be published in Thursday's Daily Record, and still more will be posted online at www.dailyrecord.com.

Ten-year-old Alexa Hesse looks at the holiday this way:

"Thanksgiving means to spend time with your friends and family and a great meal.
